Meet Chris Gurunlian a drug free competitive bodybuilder. At the time of this writing Chris is boasting an impressive record. Entering ten competitions thus far and out of the ten shows Chris has won five, and has placed in the top three in the shows he didn't win.

Not too shabby for a physical education teacher and part time personal trainer. You can bet when Chris is dispensing advice his students pay close attention.

Why do you compete?

PowerFlex Gym is where I have been training since the late 90's and they have been training athletes for bodybuilding competitions since more than a decade now. The owners approached in me in 2000 and asked me if I would like to compete as a junior and I accepted because I've always wanted to be involved in such a sport. After stepping on stage for the very first time, I fell in love with the sport and have been competiting ever since.

What was your most memorable moment while competing?

They always say your first win is the most special one and it was for me for a long time when I won my first provincial title in 2003. But I would have to say my most memorable moment was in 2007 when I won my first National title at the CBBF National World Qualifier.

Describe the first time ever you stepped on stage.

I was extremely nervous when I was waiting back stage for my name to be called out. But once I got on and I heard my friends and family cheering for me, all my anxiety went away and I felt like I was on top of the world.

What do you advocate HIT or Low Intensity Cardio?

As far as Cardio, when I am preparing for a competition, I shoot for longevity (approximately 60-90 minutes of cardio per day). I like to perform my cardio at a mid-range intensity level so that its intensity is high enough to maximize the amount of calories I burn and not too intense so that I can complete the entire amount of time.

What type of diet do you believe in?

When I am in my off-season, I eat pretty much eat whatever I want, but I make sure that I keep my protein intake at a high level. When I am preparing for a show, I follow a low carb diet, however I increase my protein intake to compensate so that my calorie intake doesn’t drop dramatically.

What does it take to develop an aesthetically pleasing physique such as yours?

I was blessed with a good foundation to build on by having good genes, however good genes can only get you so far. I’ve been working hard on my body for the past eight years to get to where I am today and I’ve done it all naturally.

I would like to thank my family for putting up with me all these years and I would like to thank my sponsors: Baton Rouge Complexe Desjardins and Boutique Sante Fit Normandie for supporting me.
